What is the valuable lesson learned here? If you want to be a “super” villain, it has more to do with how you present yourself rather than how many powers you have. Believe it or not, there is a profound truth to that scene that transcends computer generated animation, all the way to the deepest depths of brand marketing.
The way you present your service or product to your customer will have a monumental impact on how that product and service is received, which leads to how much you can charge, how much continued business you get, and whether or not you create raving fans who go on to evangelize your business. I cannot express this point strong enough. You absolutely must put as much thought and care into how you present your product or service as the product itself. A diamond wrapped in horse manure has a lot less chance of being accepted by someone than a piece of coal wrapped in a velvet box made with imported satin from the far east and sprayed with finest perfumes from Paris. Think about the brands known for their “presentation” and how you feel about them (e.g. Apple, Tiffany, etc.)
There’s something about how a product is wrapped that appeals to the senses. By appealing to the senses in a positive way, you actually create a physiological reaction to that something. The reason why a smell can bring back a flush of memories is because of how that sense heightens the event if they occur at the same time.
The same goes for graphical and product design. One example that comes to mind is my favorite new “To Do” list productivity tool, Wunderlist. I don’t know what it is, but I LOVE using this thing. I’ve tried all sorts of to-do programs, just about every major one under the sun. As much of a fan of Googple Apps and Evernote, I’ve even tried the to-do list generators in those programs. But for whatever reason, none of them really stuck. But then my uber-organized photographer/blogger wife turned me on… to Wunderlist. 😉 I instantly fell in love (with Wunderlist. I’m already in love with my wife).
The thing is, as a to-do tracker, it’s not that different from every other to-do tracker out there. You create our to-dos, check-mark them when they’re done, add due dates, and you can even share to-do lists with other collaborators. The difference is, I actually use it. Every day! This may sound weird, but I actually like checking it. I can’t explain it other than their simple, yet very appealing design and aesthetics. I love the fact that the desktop app and the web version look and work identically to one another. (And of course, they can be synched). I love the rounded corners, the bokeh background I selected, the ease of use to enter tasks. It’s just lovely.
